120Hz ProMotion & Always-On Display

The latest reports suggest that Apple is planning to upgrade its budget iPhone models to feature 120 Hz LTPO panels in the near future. While the upcoming iPhone 18e is not expected to have any significant display changes, the iPhone 19e, set to launch in early 2028, may introduce this new display technology.

LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) displays have been powering Apple’s iPhone “ProMotion” feature since the iPhone 13 Pro. This technology offers a faster refresh rate and an Always-On Display capability compared to older models using LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon).

If these reports are accurate, Apple’s budget iPhone models will receive the advanced display technology sooner than the standard iPhone lineup. This move could bring features like variable refresh rates and Always-On Display to more affordable devices.

While Apple may choose to limit certain features like Always-On Display to its premium models, the adoption of LTPO panels in budget iPhones signals a shift towards higher refresh rates becoming standard in the smartphone industry.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce LTPO3 technology in its high-end iPhone models, further differentiating them as premium products. This technology, already used in the Apple Watch, could offer significant improvements in display performance.

Apple’s history of innovation in display technology, starting with the Apple Watch and now moving to the iPhone, suggests that these advancements are a natural progression for the tech giant. As LTPO technology becomes more widespread, users can expect enhanced display capabilities across the entire iPhone lineup.
