WireGuard Locked Out of Microsoft Developer Account, Unable to Ship Updates
WireGuard, the software project and VPN behind popular security software like Mullvad, is facing a major setback. The creator, Jason Donenfeld, revealed that he has been locked out of his Microsoft developer account. This has prevented him from signing drivers and shipping updates for WireGuard on Windows, crucial for the software to function properly. Donenfeld expressed frustration over the account termination, which halted a planned WireGuard update.
This incident echoes a similar situation with VeraCrypt, another widely used encryption software, whose developer, Mounir Idrassi, also faced account termination from Microsoft. Both developers were blindsided by Microsoft’s actions, which left them unable to provide essential updates to their users.
Donenfeld emphasized the potential risks of being unable to address critical vulnerabilities promptly, leaving users vulnerable. WireGuard is a popular open-source VPN software known for its simplicity and security, used by many around the world.
Despite efforts to verify his identity with Microsoft, Donenfeld’s access remains restricted. The account verification process, which requires developers to upload government-issued IDs, aims to ensure the security of Windows users.
While Donenfeld is hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon, the situation highlights the challenges developers face in maintaining access to critical platforms like the Windows Hardware Program.
Other developers, like Windscribe, have also reported account lockout issues with Microsoft, affecting their ability to sign drivers and provide updates.
