Apple recently added the original Apple TV HD to its vintage and obsolete products list, surprising many as the device had been on the market for just over seven years. This is unusual, as typically products need to be off the market for at least seven years to be classified as “obsolete.”
The Apple TV HD, originally known as the “Apple TV (fourth-generation),” was a groundbreaking set-top box that introduced the tvOS operating system and support for third-party apps. It was available in both 32 GB and 64 GB models, with the latter being discontinued in 2017 when the Apple TV 4K was released.
Despite receiving a minor update in 2019 to differentiate it from the Apple TV 4K, the Apple TV HD was ultimately discontinued in 2024. This decision came earlier than expected, especially considering that Apple released a software update for the device in 2025.
Why Was the Apple TV HD Declared Obsolete?
It’s likely that Apple ceased production of the A1625 model, which powers the Apple TV HD, in 2018. This would explain why the device has been classified as obsolete, as key components may no longer be available for repairs. Despite receiving a new remote in 2021, the core hardware of the Apple TV HD remained unchanged.
While it’s disappointing to see the Apple TV HD reach the end of its lifecycle, it’s worth noting that the device had a remarkable eleven-year run. As a basic streaming box, it still holds up well against newer competitors in the market.
