what’s new in the latest generation

Sennheiser recently unveiled the latest addition to its premium over-ear headphone line, the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. This fifth-generation model, announced on 26 May 2026, comes with a host of updates aimed at enhancing the user experience. Some of the key improvements include advanced noise cancellation, support for various codecs, a new battery design, and spatial audio capabilities. Despite these upgrades, the new model retains the same 42mm driver unit that was featured in its predecessor.

The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless boasts a 42mm dynamic transducer, crafted at Sennheiser’s Tullamore facility in Ireland. Inspired by the HD 600-series headphones, the driver is optimized for delivering full-bodied sound with dynamic bass. The headphones are Hi-Res Audio certified and offer an extended frequency range of 6 Hz to 40 kHz when connected via Bluetooth or USB, and 6 Hz to 22 kHz via a wired analogue connection. The total harmonic distortion is less than 0.2% at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL, with a sensitivity of 108 dB SPL.

One of the standout features of this new model is its support for Snapdragon Sound technology, enabling compatibility with aptX Lossless codec. The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless also supports a range of other codecs, including SBC, AAC, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and more. With Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity as standard, the headphones are engineered for Bluetooth 6.0, which will be activated through a future firmware update. The device supports various profiles like A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, HSP, and GATT.

The active noise cancellation system on the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has been significantly upgraded, featuring eight microphones in total (four per side) for noise cancellation and transparency mode. Sennheiser claims that the system is up to three times more effective at reducing midrange noise, particularly voice chatter, compared to its predecessor. The implementation, known as Hybrid Adaptive ANC, uses MEMS microphones with a pickup frequency range of 20 Hz to 15 kHz.

In terms of battery life, the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless offers up to 57 hours of playback with ANC active, with a quick charge feature providing up to seven hours of playback in just ten minutes. A notable addition is the user-replaceable battery, allowing users to easily swap out the 700 mAh lithium-ion cell without the need for specialized tools.

The headphones are complemented by the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, which offers an 8-band equalizer, custom presets, and intelligent Sound Personalization engine. The app also provides access to firmware updates for future enhancements.

With a circum-aural design and three color options, the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is a stylish and feature-packed addition to Sennheiser’s lineup. Charging is done via USB-C, and the headphones come with a carry case, USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5mm analogue audio cable. Sennheiser has not yet confirmed pricing or availability details for the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, but more information is expected to follow the announcement.
