“VRChat is not going anywhere” Founders Reassure Amid Downturn in Social VR Platforms

VRChat Co-Founders Reassure Users About Platform’s Future

Rec Room is shutting down in June. Meta’s Horizon Worlds is searching for greener pastures on mobile. But don’t fret, VRChat co-founders Graham Gaylor and Jesse Joudrey say there’s no need to worry about the social VR platform’s future.

“In case you were wondering, VRChat is not going anywhere,” the studio co-founders affirm in a recent blog post.

Gaylor and Joudrey, who established VRChat in 2014, attribute their confidence in the platform’s future to its consistent ability to attract record numbers of visitors across various devices including Quest, SteamVR, Pico headsets, PC, and mobile.

“Last New Year’s Eve, nearly 150,000 people were in VRChat simultaneously—celebrating a worldwide event for yet another year. Since then, we’ve broken that user record twice, with our latest peak reaching nearly 160,000 users in VRChat at the same time,” the studio founders reveal.

The platform’s creator economy is thriving, with creators like Studio TrickForge, spookyghostboo, and nawty shaping unique communities and experiences while earning for their hard work. The introduction of a centralized marketplace for avatars and virtual items in mid-2025 using VRChat Credits has further boosted revenue streams.

Despite market challenges, Gaylor and Joudrey emphasize that the heart of VRChat lies in its vibrant communities.

“Our community sets VRChat apart from other platforms. You create worlds that defy imagination, build avatars that express identity like never before, and welcome strangers into your communities, often changing their lives for the better,” the co-founders express.

Amidst challenges in the broader VR gaming industry, such as Meta’s shift in focus away from VR gaming and the closure of various VR studios, VRChat remains a beacon of stability and community in the evolving landscape of virtual reality.
