VR Extraction Dungeon Crawler ‘Reave’ Has Been Cancelled After Months in Open Beta

Reave VR Game Cancelled by Alta Studios

Reave, a highly anticipated VR extraction dungeon crawler from Alta Studios, the creators of Township Tale, has been cancelled despite being in a mature state ready for open playtesting for months.

After the successful launch of Township Tale on Quest in 2021, Alta Studios secured over $12 million in investment to expand the studio and speed up development of the game.

In April 2024, the studio announced they were working on a new game, initially known as ‘Project 2’. Over a year later, the game was officially named Reave, promising a mix of dungeon crawling and extraction-style PvPvE gameplay.

Despite undergoing numerous closed alpha and open beta testing rounds starting in late 2025, the studio recently announced the abrupt cancellation of Reave before its scheduled launch. The official announcement was made on the game’s Discord server, stating that the current playtest would be the final one, with the gates closing on May 4, 2026.

The closure of the game has raised questions about the future of Alta Studios and potential layoffs. The impact on their previous title, Township Tale, remains uncertain.
