TCL Unveils Latest OLED and Micro-LED Displays for AR and VR Headsets TCL has recently showcased its newest OLED and micro-LED displays designed for AR and VR headsets at the SID Display Week event. The company boasts of achieving groundbreaking pixel density benchmarks. At the event, TCL presented its latest 2.24-inch display, which it claims to be the "highest pixel density real RGB G-OLED display" with an impressive 1,700 PPI (pixels per inch). The display offers a total resolution of 7.2MP (2,600 × 2,784) and a refresh rate of 120Hz. This layout ensures that each pixel consists of equally sized red, green, and blue subpixels, enhancing image quality. With its compact size, the 2.24-inch display is ideal for VR and MR headsets in the current size-class. However, for more compact devices, TCL introduces its new micro-LED display. While not suitable for wide field-of-view devices, this display could deliver retina-resolution in small field-of-view applications, such as smart glasses. Targeting smart glasses, TCL highlights that micro-LED technology is self-emissive and offers high brightness, making it suitable for combating daylight environments. Claimed as the "highest PPI single-chip full-color silicon micro-LED display," this display features a resolution of 0.9MP (1,280 × 720), surpassing the pixel count of Meta's current Ray-Ban Display glasses. Although the impressive specs of these displays hold promise, their success in the market will also depend on factors like cost, reliability, and other undisclosed details.
