Apple TV software updates are usually low-key, but the upcoming tvOS 26.2 is an exception with a family-friendly change. The set-top box now has multiple user profiles, making it easier for everyone to enjoy. In the past, the Apple TV was a single-user device, mirroring the iPhone and iPad. However, a set-top box should cater to the whole family. Apple introduced multiple user profiles in tvOS 13, but third-party apps only fully supported them in tvOS 16. With tvOS 26, there is a front-end selection screen for choosing profiles each time you use the Apple TV, making it more convenient for families. You can still opt for a single-user approach if you prefer. One limitation of user profiles was the need for an Apple Account to create one. In tvOS 26.2, this requirement is removed, allowing for easier profile creation, including "Kid" profiles with appropriate content ratings. Apple TV Fun for the Whole Family Creating profiles in tvOS 26.2 betas no longer requires signing in with an Apple device. You can now directly create a profile by entering a name, selecting an avatar, and choosing if it's a "Kid" profile. While the feature is primarily for Apple's apps, it's possible to create profiles for users without Apple Accounts or generic profiles for visitors. However, third-party app support for profiles remains limited. It’s Still a Small Garden Despite improvements in tvOS 26, third-party support for profiles is lacking. The new "Automatic Sign-In API" aims to simplify sign-in processes, but developers need to adopt it. Apple TV's ecosystem is small compared to the iPhone, making it less enticing for developers. While the Apple TV garden is open, developers are hesitant to fully embrace it due to technical challenges and the prevalence of existing profile systems in popular streaming apps.
