Sony Shuts Down Dark Outlaw Games Studio Headed by Jason Blundell
Sony has announced the closure of Dark Outlaw Games, a studio led by Jason Blundell known for his work on COD Zombies. This move comes just one year after the studio was established under Sony in March 2025, marking the second time Sony has ended a partnership with a company founded by Blundell.
The news, first reported on resetera, was confirmed by Jason Schreier with a simple “yup.”
Details about Dark Outlaw’s project were scarce as the studio was still in the early stages of development. Despite being confirmed, there was no public branding, announcement trailer, or other updates in the past year.
This follows Blundell’s previous venture with Sony, Deviation Games, which was founded in 2020. The collaboration was set to develop a “groundbreaking AAA original IP,” but after Blundell’s departure in 2022, the project faced funding issues and ultimately closed in 2024.
The extent of the impact on Dark Outlaw’s team is unknown, but it is likely that the studio was relatively small. Our thoughts are with the affected developers during this challenging time for the industry.
Additionally, there have been reports of layoffs within PlayStation’s US and UK divisions, albeit on a small scale. Sony is also shifting focus away from mobile gaming, except for select projects like MLB The Show Mobile and Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble.
Recent developments, including the closure of Bluepoint Games and concerns over Sony’s live service projects, raise questions about the future of various studios and initiatives. While titles like Horizon Hunters Gathering seem secure, other projects like those from Bend Studio and Gummy Bears face uncertainties.
