Google announced today its plans to update Google Maps in accordance with President Trump's executive order to change the names of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Mount McKinley to Denali. The updated nomenclature will be reflected once the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated. "We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources," Google stated. The company also mentioned that users will see the official local name when name changes vary between countries, while everyone else in the world will see both names. Previously known as Mount McKinley, Denali underwent a name change in 2015. The US Department of the Interior has confirmed its intention to implement the executive order for the name changes. "The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, under the Department of the Interior, is swiftly working to update the official federal nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System to reflect these changes, effective immediately for federal use," the Department of the Interior stated on Friday. As of now, there has been no comment from Apple regarding any potential changes to Apple Maps.
