As part of iOS 26.4, Apple is updating its Podcasts app to offer enhanced video podcast capabilities to creators and listeners. This new experience will allow users to seamlessly switch between viewing a video podcast and listening to the audio content. A seamless experience for users Apple's move comes as it competes with Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix for podcast audience attention. Video podcasts that enable seamless switching between video and audio have gained popularity in recent times. Although Apple already supports video podcasts, the technology upgrade in iOS 26.4 is based on the company's HTTP Live Streaming technology. With HLS technology, Apple can provide video playback without compromising the audio podcast listening experience. This technology allows for automatic quality adjustment based on network conditions and enables users to download video podcasts for offline viewing. For creators, Apple is introducing a new video podcast experience that offers more control over content distribution and monetization: The new video podcast experience empowers creators to distribute content through participating hosting providers and ad networks while maintaining control over their content and revenue. Acast, Amazon's ART19, iHeartMedia's Triton Digital, and SiriusXM are among the providers supporting HLS video at launch, with more expected to join later. Additionally, dynamically inserted video ads will be supported in Apple's Podcasts app for the first time, providing creators with new monetization opportunities: Creators can now insert video ads, including host-read spots, seamlessly into their shows, tapping into the video advertising market while retaining creative control. These ads integrate smoothly into existing content without disrupting the audience experience, allowing creators to monetize through sponsorships and dynamic advertising. While Apple does not charge for podcast distribution through its app, ad networks will be charged a fee for dynamic ads in HLS video podcast episodes under the new system: Apple does not charge hosting providers or creators for podcast distribution on Apple Podcasts. However, ad networks will be charged a standard fee for delivering dynamic ads in HLS video on Apple Podcasts later this year. Apple confirms that the updated video podcast experience will be available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and the web, offering a wider reach for creators and listeners. Podcast hosting providers and creators can learn more about enabling HLS video on Apple Podcasts and utilizing Apple's tools for producing exceptional video podcast episodes at podcasters.apple.com. iOS 26.4 is now available as a developer beta, introducing these new changes to Apple Podcasts.
