Snap's latest venture, Specs Inc, has joined forces with Qualcomm in a multi-year partnership to develop Snap's upcoming AR glasses. Qualcomm has committed to providing Snapdragon chips for future iterations of the glasses, with both companies confirming that Snap's next-gen Specs are set to launch "later this year." Specs Inc, established by Snap in January to oversee its XR initiatives, is collaborating with Qualcomm on a "long-term strategic roadmap" focused on advancing technologies such as on-device AI, cutting-edge graphics, and advanced multiuser digital experiences, as stated in a joint press release by the companies. "Snap Inc. and Qualcomm Technologies have a proven track record of driving innovation in immersive technology. This agreement builds on over five years of partnership and innovation, with Snapdragon platforms having powered previous generations of Snap's Spectacles," the companies expressed. Although Snap has not yet unveiled its next-gen Specs, the company seems to be emphasizing the device's integrated AI, which aims to "understand you and your surroundings to assist with tasks while prioritizing privacy," as stated by Snap earlier this year. "The future of computing will revolve around devices that comprehend what you see, hear, and say, as well as the context, and respond instantly to your environment," remarked Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon. "Our collaboration on future iterations of Specs will enable power-efficient interactive AR devices that offer immersive experiences that feel natural, intuitive, and seamlessly integrate into daily life." Scheduled for release later this year, the next version of Spec will technically mark the company's second pair of AR glasses, following the fifth-gen release in 2024. Besides Snap mentioning that the new AR device will be smaller and lighter, feature see-through AR optics, and be powered by a Snapdragon XR SoC, specific details about its features remain largely undisclosed.
