Sunbird Messaging, the popular app that allows Android users to join iMessage conversations without the green bubble stigma, is back with a new and improved version now available on the Google Play Store. After a setback in 2023 due to security concerns, Sunbird is determined to regain the trust of its users.
CEO Danny Mizrahi assures users that the app now prioritizes security, with messages being encrypted on the device, in transit, and while stored on the phone using AES 256 encryption. An independent security firm has tested the rebuilt app and found no critical vulnerabilities. Additionally, Apple ID passwords are now used only once to start a session and then deleted entirely.
In addition to enhanced security measures, the new Sunbird app features a priority inbox that categorizes conversations into Primary and Secondary tabs to ensure important chats are easily accessible. Sunbird has also expanded its reach to include Google Messages and SMS in one inbox, with plans to integrate WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger later this year.
Looking ahead, Sunbird has hinted at the upcoming launch of an AI assistant called Sunbird Intelligence in the third quarter of 2026. This feature is designed to summarize missed conversations and assist users in drafting replies. With over 181,000 sign-ups during the closed access period prior to the relaunch, Sunbird is eager to prove that it has addressed previous issues that led to its temporary shutdown. Only time and external security audits will confirm if Sunbird has truly regained the trust of its users.
