Windows users can now rejoice as Microsoft is introducing significant changes to Windows Update. Users on the Dev and Experimental Windows Insider channels will have the ability to delay updates for up to 35 days at a time, giving them more control over when updates are installed.
Microsoft’s decision to make updates less disruptive comes as part of a series of improvements planned for Windows 11. Users will now be able to extend the pause end date indefinitely and reset to another 35-day window as many times as needed. If updates are not paused again at the end of the 35-day period, they will automatically run.
Furthermore, the changes to Windows Update will provide more detailed titles for driver updates, specifying the device class they apply to, such as display, audio, or battery.
In addition to these updates, Windows 11 will now offer options in the power menu to restart or shut down without running updates, as well as the ability to skip updates during the initial setup of a new Windows device. Microsoft is also streamlining the update experience by grouping updates together to reduce the frequency of reboots. Updates will now download in the background and wait for a coordinated installation and restart.
