iOS 27 is set to revolutionize user experience by integrating with third-party AI platforms, as per a recent report. This advancement will allow iPhone users to select from a variety of third-party models offered by companies like Google and Anthropic, including the option to personalize Siri’s voice based on the external model in use.
iOS 27 integration with AI apps
As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is introducing this new feature called “Extensions” in iOS 27. Early versions of iOS 27 reveal that Extensions will enable users to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features like Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and more.
The report details:
Apple Inc. will provide users with the option to choose from external artificial intelligence services to enhance various software features, further solidifying its devices as a comprehensive AI platform.
Users will have the flexibility to pick from different third-party AI models for tasks such as text and image generation and editing, as per sources familiar with the matter. These changes are expected to roll out with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 in the coming fall, added the sources, who preferred anonymity due to the confidential nature of the plans.
Users will have the ability to select AI models that offer support through their respective App Store apps. For instance, Google and Anthropic could integrate this Extensions system with their Gemini and Claude apps, allowing users to utilize these models for features like Siri, Writing Tools, and more.
This development complements Apple’s collaboration with Google to leverage Gemini for native Siri and Apple Intelligence functions. Today’s announcement follows a previous Bloomberg report from March, shedding light on how the Extensions system will interact with Siri. The latest update reveals its broader integration with Apple Intelligence features beyond just the voice assistant.
Apple introduced ChatGPT integration in iOS 18, using it for world knowledge queries in Siri and other applications like Image Playground.
Regarding Siri, the report also mentions that iOS 27 will enable users to select different voices for each AI model:
Furthermore, users will be able to choose distinct voices for Siri conversations powered by external models. In this scenario, queries handled by Apple’s system could utilize one voice, while responses from third-party models like Anthropic’s Claude could employ a different voice.
iOS 27 is scheduled to be unveiled at WWDC, commencing on June 8. What are your thoughts on Apple’s upcoming plans for iOS 27? Share your opinions in the comments section.
