iOS 26.5 RC Arrives with Encrypted RCS and a Splash of Pride

After Apple’s announcement of its 2026 Pride Collection, Apple has released the Release Candidates of iOS 26.5 and other operating systems, which are less than a week away from the official release.

Release Candidates, or “RC” builds, signify the end of the beta cycle for Apple’s operating systems. These builds are usually the final versions that are released to the public with minimal changes. The RC builds also provide a preview of the official release notes for the upcoming update.

One of the notable features in iOS 26.5 is the end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging, which was initially mentioned in the developer release notes for iOS 26.4 beta but not in the final release. However, it has been confirmed in the RC build of iOS 26.5 with detailed release notes.

RCS Encryption

The end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in Messages is available in beta with supported carriers and will roll out gradually. The encryption is based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) part of the RCS specification.

The Messages app in iOS 26.5 will indicate when a chat is encrypted with an “Encrypted” tag and a padlock icon. However, older Android devices may not support this encryption.

Pride Luminance Wallpaper

iOS 26.5 introduces the Pride Luminance wallpapers and watch face as promised by Apple, featuring dynamic colors.

Suggested Places in Maps

Apple Maps in iOS 26.5 will offer recommendations for places to visit based on user searches and trending locations. The new “Suggested Places” feature might also include advertising in the future.

What Else to Expect in iOS 26.5

Other features in iOS 26.5 include a new subscription plan for app subscriptions, automatic pairing of Apple’s Magic accessories, enhanced iPhone-Android transfer options, potential Apple Books Awards, and a new Inuktitut keyboard layout. Apple is also preparing to comply with EU regulations for third-party accessories.

The public release of iOS 26.5 is expected by early next week, with the possibility of an earlier release alongside the Apple Watch Pride Sport Band.
