Identity and AI: Questions of data security, trust and control

AI-powered identity solutions are often seen as the sophisticated solution to modern access control: more intelligent verification, less friction, enhanced security, and happier users. While this may be true in theory, in practice, they bring along a significant amount of compliance, privacy, and ethical considerations.

One of the primary concerns is compliance. Identity plays a crucial role in enterprise environments, intersecting with security, governance, risk, and accountability. When AI is utilized in determining access rights, challenging individuals, flagging suspicious activities, or denying entry, it transitions from being just a technical control to a governance issue. Many AI identity solutions rely on large amounts of personal data, including biometrics, behavioral analysis, device data, location information, and usage patterns. Organizations must ensure compliance with legal requirements regarding lawful basis, necessity, proportionality, data retention, and oversight. It is not enough to know that a tool can perform a function; organizations must also consider whether they should be utilizing it at all.

Privacy becomes a murky area when it comes to AI identity systems. These systems are often marketed based on their ability to consider a wide range of signals to make better decisions. While this can be beneficial, it also leads to increased data collection, processing, and potential privacy breaches. The boundary between intelligent authentication and overreach can easily blur, with identity verification data being used for monitoring behavior, profiling employees, tracking habits, or supporting surveillance efforts. This raises concerns about trust, necessitating privacy by design, impact assessments, transparent notices, and clear boundaries on the use of identity data.

Ethical considerations also come into play, as AI models are not inherently unbiased despite their mathematical nature. If an identity tool is trained on biased or incomplete data, it may exhibit uneven performance across different groups, resulting in higher false rejections, challenges for legitimate users, and decisions that disproportionately affect certain individuals. This can lead to unfair, exclusionary, and potentially discriminatory outcomes in a business setting. Organizations cannot simply deploy these systems and expect them to operate fairly; explainability, human review, escalation processes, and clear accountability are essential components of the design.

Ultimately, AI-driven identity solutions should not be viewed as a standalone security enhancement. They are part of a broader landscape that includes data protection, user trust, accountability, and control. When implemented effectively, AI can enhance resilience and reduce fraud. However, if used improperly, it can introduce opaque and over-engineered risks that good governance aims to mitigate. The key is not to resist the technology but to govern it effectively from the beginning. In the realm of identity, as in many other areas, intelligence without control leads to chaos disguised in sophistication.
