Google Unveils Project Genie: An AI Experiment for Creating Virtual Environments
Last August, DeepMind, Google’s AI research lab, introduced Genie 3, showcasing an AI system capable of generating interactive virtual environments in real-time. Now, Google has launched an experimental prototype that Google AI subscribers can test today. While the ability to generate VR worlds on the fly is not yet fully realized, we are getting closer to this exciting prospect.

Project Genie, labeled an “experimental research prototype” by Google, allows users to create, explore, and modify interactive virtual environments through a web interface. Unlike previous image and video generators, Project Genie features two main prompt boxes—one for the environment and one for the character. Additionally, a third prompt box enables users to make modifications before generating the environment.
However, Google acknowledges that Project Genie has limitations as an early research system. Generated environments may not precisely adhere to real-world physics, character control can be inconsistent, session durations are limited to 60 seconds, and some initially announced features are still in development.
For now, users can only output a video of their experience, although they can also explore and remix other available ‘worlds’ in the gallery. Project Genie is currently rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US, aged 18 and above, with plans for broader availability in the future.
