Google has recently expanded its Google Meet conferencing app to the dashboard, but with a twist – it’s launching first for iPhone users via CarPlay, not for Android Auto.
This follows the recent arrival of ChatGPT for in-car infotainment systems, making it a good week for CarPlay users. However, unlike OpenAI, Google Meet seems to be taking its time with this launch.
While Zoom and Microsoft Teams have been available on CarPlay for years, Google Meet has been a noticeable absence. It’s unclear if Google is leveraging any new iOS features for a better experience, as the app only requires iOS 17.0, not the latest version.
Google announced the feature on its Google Workspace blog, stating that it will be available to all users with personal Google accounts, as well as Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers.
We’re thrilled to introduce Google Meet for Apple CarPlay, allowing professionals to stay connected and join meetings hands-free while on the go.
The feature is currently exclusive to iPhone CarPlay users, but Google mentions that an Android Auto version of Meet is on the way.
Joining Meetings on the Road
If you’ve used Zoom or Teams on CarPlay before, Google Meet offers a similar experience. Video won’t be available while driving, turning it into an audio-only experience for safety.
You can easily find and join scheduled meetings with a tap, eliminating the need for invite links. On-screen controls allow you to manage your meeting, but interactive features like chatting and raising hands are unavailable on CarPlay.
Google Meet will appear in a widget on the CarPlay dashboard, allowing you to monitor the meeting while keeping an eye on navigation and other information.
Transitioning a meeting between your iPhone and CarPlay is seamless, with the app adapting to your on-the-go needs. Note that CarPlay support is specific to the Google Meet app, so make sure to download it if you want to use it in your car.
