Can It Actually Launch in 2027?

New information has emerged regarding the recent report about OpenAI developing an AI-powered smartphone, indicating that the company is moving quickly to bring the device to market.

Ming-Chi Kuo, who initially broke the news on April 26, has now revealed that the “AI agent phone” is on a fast track and could possibly launch in the first half of next year.

Kuo also delves into the technical specifications, mentioning that the new phone will be powered by MediaTek’s advanced 2nm Dimensity 9600 chip, known for its superior image signal processor (ISP) that enhances HDR processing for real-world object recognition.

Kuo predicts that OpenAI could sell up to 30 million units of the new smartphone in 2027–28, marking a significant milestone for a company venturing into the hardware market for the first time.

While previous statements suggested otherwise, it’s conceivable that Sam Altman and Jony Ive are considering a smartphone as part of their hardware design collaboration. However, the successful execution of such a project remains uncertain.

Kuo, although a solitary voice in discussing OpenAI’s smartphone plans, has a track record of accurate insights into the supply chain but has sometimes missed the mark on timing predictions. Nevertheless, he believes that OpenAI is expediting this project to align with a year-end IPO and establish itself as a pioneer in AI-driven phones.
