Apple testing automatic audio switching for third-party accessories

Apple is testing a new framework that brings automatic audio switching to third-party audio accessories as part of its compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. This new feature allows third-party accessory makers to share headphone data with the system to enable automatic audio switching, similar to the experience offered with AirPods.

Apple to expand third-party integration for audio accessories

Apple has published a support document for a framework called AudioAccessoryKit, which will enable third-party accessory makers to share headphone data with the system to support automatic audio switching. This feature is currently limited to development and EU users.

This framework supports iPhone and iPad only and is available for development or Ad Hoc testing. It will support App Store submission, TestFlight, and alternative distribution at a later time for devices located in the EU signed in with an Apple Account from an EU country or region.

Developers will need to pair their accessory using AccessorySetupKit and register it with AudioAccessoryKit to enable features like automatic audio switching and placement detection. The accessory’s companion app will report events to the system, such as when headphones are put on or taken off, allowing iOS to reroute audio accordingly. Bluetooth accessories can also report connected devices to help determine the correct audio source in multi-device scenarios.

The documentation states that AudioAccessoryKit and its APIs are compatible with iOS 26.4 or later and iPadOS 26.4 or later. To learn more about this new framework, click here.
