Ys X: Nordics was originally launched in Japan last year and received critical acclaim. Now, it has made its way to the west and onto PC. The PC version of the game includes various graphical upgrades and keyboard support. Unlike its predecessor, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, which received co-op as a post-launch bonus on PC, Ys X: Nordics features local co-op from day one.
In Ys X, players once again follow the adventures of the protagonist Adol, who is now accompanied by the pirate Karja. This partnership introduces ship-shaped exploration and combat mechanics. Players can switch between the two characters on the fly or control them together, building their “Revenge Gauge” to execute combined attacks.
The Ys series has a long history, dating back to the ’80s, but it has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially on PC. Monstrum Nox was a best seller on Steam in July 2021, and experts have praised it as a great entry point to the series.
I have yet to delve into the Ys series myself, and I must admit that naval battles are not my favorite. However, I do appreciate the game’s blue skies and grappling hooks. Maybe I’ll find time to experience it after finishing Ni no Kuni.
Ys X: Nordics is now available on Steam for £55/€60/$60, and there is a demo available where your progress can carry over to the full game.
