Dark Mode Innovation on Apple Watch Ultra and watchOS 10
Dark Mode on iPhone, iPad, and Mac provides flexibility for users. Whether toggling it on/off from Control Center or Settings, automatically switching based on time of day, or using local sunrise and sunset times, there are various options available.
However, a new method for invoking dark mode is showcased on the Apple Watch Ultra running watchOS 10, with its exclusive extreme sports face called Wayfinder.
Launched in September 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra introduces the Wayfinder face, offering unique features such as transforming the time into degrees on a compass by tapping the dial. Additionally, the watch face includes a “Night Mode” option, turning it red and black for easier viewing in dark environments.
Furthermore, watchOS 10 introduces a new widget system called Smart Stack, allowing users to customize their favorite widgets and view contextually relevant information.
With the Smart Stack feature, users can easily access widgets by swiping up from the bottom of any watch face or spinning the Digital Crown upward.
In watchOS 10, Night Mode on the Wayfinder watch face can be toggled by rotating the crown, while the Smart Stack feature resolves any conflicts by moving Night Mode to the watch face customizer.
Moreover, watchOS 10 introduces Auto Night Mode, which switches based on ambient light sensing, offering a convenient way to adapt to different environments.
Looking ahead, ambient light sensing as a Dark Mode toggle could be a valuable addition to future versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, inspired by the successful implementation on the Apple Watch Ultra Wayfinder face.
