Watch: Amazon drone cuts internet cable in Texas, triggering FAA investigation

Oops: Amazon Drone Accidentally Cuts Internet Cable in Texas

Amazon made headlines last week when one of its drones caused chaos by cutting an internet cable in Waco, Texas. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident.

On November 18th, an Amazon MK30 drone became entangled with a hanging internet cable, resulting in the drone accidentally severing the cable as it tried to fly away, as captured in a video of the incident.

Amazon clarified that the drone was returning from a delivery when the mishap occurred, triggering a safety feature that prompted the drone to land immediately. Fortunately, there were no injuries or major disruptions to internet services, and Amazon promptly covered the costs of repairing the damaged cable.

Despite Amazon downplaying the incident, the FAA has launched an investigation into the matter. This comes after a previous probe into Amazon following drone-related accidents in Arizona, which led to a temporary suspension of drone deliveries in the area.

Amazon’s Prime Air engineering team dedicated significant time to developing the MK30 drones, equipping them with advanced sense and avoid technology. Despite boasting innovative features and enhanced safety measures, the recent incidents raise questions about the drones’ capabilities.

Amazon advises customers to ensure there is sufficient open space for drone deliveries to be completed safely. The company continues to strive for improvements in drone technology to prevent future mishaps.
