Having just watched the announcement trailer for Whispers of the Eyeless, I have one simple request: please, do not include that voiceover in the final game. It is overly dramatic and cheesy, starting with lines like “The Whispers [of the Eyeless] call to me!!!” and only getting worse from there. Despite that, I am quite excited about the game.
Developed by Evil Gingerbread Studios and Venris, the creator of the Total War: Warhammer 3 mod SFO, Whispers Of The Eyeless follows the story of building a dark cult beneath a sinister city in order to resurrect three ancient gods: Wrath, Desire, and Madness. This strategy RPG features eerie storybook art similar to Darkest Dungeon, turn-based combat mechanics, and elements of base and army-building. Drawing inspiration from games like Loop Hero, Children Of Morta, and Polish folklore, this game promises a unique and engaging experience.
“Assume the role of the last descendent of the Old Faith and First Prophet of the New Age in the city of Aranthor where new and old gods vie for power,” states the Steam description. “Defeated, exiled, and nearly forgotten, the Dead Gods have remained silent for generations. But now, the Whispers have returned. The ‘Dead’ Gods were never truly dead, and it is up to you to restore them to their former glory.”
The city of Aranthor is ruled by various ambitious Living Gods and is divided into districts with distinct enemies, cultures, and histories. Each district offers a “branching web of events” for players to explore. As the cult leader, you will navigate these districts alone, recruiting cultists and ordaining them as disciples to carry out missions on your behalf.
Players will also need to choose which Dead God to favor, as this decision will impact the appearance of their underground lair. “Upgrade your base, perform divine Benedictions, and make Sacrifices to the Dead Gods to strengthen the cult and increase your power in the city as Prophet,” the description continues. “The God you favor will influence the appearance of your Sanctum, which can be customized to your preferences.”
Whispers Of The Eyeless is nearing completion, with publishers Camlann Games announcing that it will enter Steam early access in either Q4 2024 or Q1 2025. A demo is expected to be available during one of Valve’s upcoming Steam Next Fests, scheduled for either October 2024 or February 2025. Let’s hope that by then, the haunting narration from the launch trailer will be a distant memory.
