Touch ID on the Apple Watch? New Code Shows It Could Happen

The Apple Watch Can Keep You Healthy

The iPhone 16e released earlier this year introduced Face ID to Apple’s most affordable iPhone, marking the end of Touch ID for the family. However, new internal developer code suggests that Touch ID could make a comeback on a future Apple Watch.

Touch ID is still alive and well, being used across nearly all iPad and Mac models. Only the iPad Pro features Face ID, and none of Apple’s Macs have adopted the facial recognition technology. The addition of biometric authentication on an Apple Watch would be a significant development, potentially making it the smallest Apple device to incorporate Touch ID.

The code hints at Touch ID coming to future Apple Watch models in 2026, mentioning support for “AppleMesa” – the internal codename for Touch ID at Apple. However, this code is in its early stages and is intended for internal use on prototype devices. There is no indication that Touch ID will be included in this year’s Apple Watch models, as there have been no rumors or references to Touch ID drivers for the upcoming devices.

The implementation of Touch ID on the Apple Watch remains uncertain, with multiple patented approaches by Apple, including under-display sensors, side button placement, and underside placement. While the under-display sensor may seem like an advanced option, it is unclear if Apple will pursue this technology for the Apple Watch due to technical challenges.

A more practical approach would be to integrate Touch ID into the side button or Digital Crown of the Apple Watch, similar to the iPad’s design. This placement would be more intuitive for users and could enhance features like Apple Pay authentication.

Additionally, the code suggests that the next generation of Apple Watch models, specifically the Series 12, will receive a significant processor upgrade to the T8320 chip. This improvement in processing power could lead to enhanced capabilities in watchOS 27.
