Rockstar fans have long awaited proper VR support for their favorite games, and modder ‘Holydh’ has answered the call with a modified UEVR plugin for the PC version of GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition (2021). This brings the updated classic to PC VR headsets, offering a whole new level of immersion.
The ‘GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition – 6DoF UEVR Plugin’ introduces full first-person VR gameplay with 6DOF motion controls to the Steam version of the game. It’s important to note that the mod currently only works with the Steam version and not with the Epic Games Store or Rockstar launcher versions.
Built on the Unreal Engine VR (UEVR) plugin by ‘praydog’, Holydh’s mod goes beyond what UEVR offers. It features on-foot movements, vehicle driving including the jetpack, camera comfort tweaks, motion controller-supported weapons, and more. With the addition of sniper scope functionality, players can experience the entire game in VR from start to finish.
To experience this mod, head over to Nexus Mods to download it for free. You’ll need to follow a few steps to make it compatible with the Steam version of the game, including obtaining Praydog’s UEVR Nightly 01042 build linked on the Nexus Mods page. Some users have reported success with NVIDIA RTX 2080 GPUs, but there are also graphical settings to adjust for older hardware.
While the project is open-source and available for modification on GitHub, there is a cautionary note regarding Take-Two, Rockstar Games’ parent company, which has a history of taking down similar mods. However, since Holydh’s plugin is free and not behind a paywall like previous takedowns, it appears to be a safe option for enjoying GTA: San Andreas in VR on PC headsets.
Unfortunately, the official release of GTA: San Andreas on Quest has been delayed indefinitely, so for now, PC VR users have the opportunity to dive into the virtual world of San Andreas like never before.
