This 3D conversion of Fallout 1 using GZDoom can have all my money right now

In context: Around five years ago, gaming artist Alexander “Red888guns” Berezin shared his idea of Fallout 1 as a first-person shooter. This simple animated GIF sparked the question: What if he used the Doom engine to recreate Fallout?

Recently, Berezin unveiled a video showcasing his “total conversion” of Fallout using the GZDoom engine, named “Fallout: Bakersfield,” set in the iconic Fallout 1 location of Necropolis in Bakersfield, California. For those dreaming of experiencing Fallout in a 3D engine, this project is as close as it gets.

The trailer pays tribute to the original Fallout promo, transitioning to gameplay footage resembling GZDoom with a Fallout twist. The retro 2.5D visuals combined with modern polish, especially the Pip-Boy 2000-inspired HUD, solidify the Fallout ambiance.

The development of this project began in 2023, concentrating on Fallout’s Necropolis area and storyline, including a boss fight with the super mutant Harry. Although still a work in progress with Berezin and his brother Denis as the sole developers, community support could lead to further expansion.

The project is approximately 60% complete, hinting at a potential 2027 release date. Bethesda’s history of supporting modding communities suggests little opposition, although uncertainties remain.

Regarding legal concerns, previous Fallout fan projects like Fallout: London faced unexpected delays due to Bethesda’s actions. Despite potential hurdles, Fallout: Bakersfield remains a passion project, not driven by financial gain.

Berezin offers progress updates through his Boosty account under “Red888guns,” allowing subscribers to contribute to the project’s development.
