There’s More to Apple’s New iPad Pro Than Just the M5 Chip

This past week, Apple introduced a new iPad Pro powered by the M5 chip, solidifying its position as the first device to feature the latest generation silicon. Alongside this release, Apple also unveiled a new base-model MacBook Pro and an updated Vision Pro. While all three devices received modest updates centered around the new M5 chip, the iPad Pro saw the most significant changes.

Although the MacBook Pro now offers a 4 TB storage option and faster SSD throughput, and the Vision Pro has a new headband, these devices remain largely unchanged from their predecessors. The M5 chip, however, is a notable upgrade, especially for the Vision Pro, which has now advanced three generations in Apple silicon. Those expecting more substantial upgrades to Apple’s laptop or headset will likely have to wait until next fall.

The iPad Pro, on the other hand, has some additional enhancements beyond the M5 chip. While an M5 upgrade may not be as crucial for Apple’s tablet, the device has been equipped with extra features that enhance the user experience.

Embracing the Wi-Fi 7 Era

One of the most significant enhancements is the iPad Pro becoming the first Apple device to support Wi-Fi 7, expanding beyond the iPhone. Apple has historically led the way in adopting new Wi-Fi standards, with the iPhone 11 introducing Wi-Fi 6 and the M2 iPad Pro debuting Wi-Fi 6E. Now, the iPad Pro is ahead of the curve with Wi-Fi 7 support, thanks to Apple’s new N1 chip.

In addition to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 support, the N1 chip also improves features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop, providing a smoother wireless experience tailored to Apple’s devices.

Boosting the Cellular Model

The M5 iPad Pro features the C1X modem chip, offering up to 50% faster cellular data performance and 30% improved power efficiency. This upgrade enhances the device’s capabilities for users who rely on cellular connectivity.

A Better Laptop Replacement

Other improvements on the M5 iPad Pro include increased RAM in lower storage configurations, support for higher refresh rates on external displays, and official fast charging capabilities. These enhancements make the iPad Pro a compelling choice for power users, gamers, and professionals seeking a versatile and efficient device.
