The new PSSR is rolling out to PS5 Pro, starting with Resident Evil Requiem

Sony Announces Upgraded Version of PSSR Rolling Out for PS5 Pro

Sony has revealed that the enhanced version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is set to launch for the PS5 Pro, starting with a seamless integration with Resident Evil Requiem. Additionally, a system-level toggle for backward compatibility is in the works and will be available soon.

The new iteration of PSSR is a result of the collaboration between Sony and AMD on Project Amethyst. This project initially led to FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) for the Radeon 9000 series GPUs on PC, and has now been optimized to function with the dedicated upscaling hardware in the PS5 Pro. Mark Cerny, in his announcement, emphasized that “With the updated PSSR, we are bringing the latest co-developed technology with an additional six months of refinement specifically for PS5 Pro users.”

Upcoming games will have the option to incorporate this revamped version of PSSR seamlessly, with full support and integration scheduled to be included in a PS5 system software update in March. Cerny also mentioned that several existing games will receive upgrades to the enhanced PSSR during that time.

For games that do not undergo the upgrade, there is no need to worry. Around 50 games currently support PSSR, having been modified to leverage the unique features of the PS5 Pro. Sony has ensured that a system-level upgrade toggle will be provided to enable the utilization of the new PSSR. Once the March update is live, users can navigate to the Screen and Visio settings and select “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” This will apply the updated algorithms and techniques to any game that currently supports PSSR.

This concept is reminiscent of interchangeable upscalers on PC, where users can switch out .DLL files or utilize tools like OptiScaler to introduce a different upscaler. While the transition is expected to be smooth in most games, there may be occasional challenges. For instance, Silent Hill 2 Remake initially struggled with the implementation of the original PSSR and required patches.

Overall, this enhancement is a highly anticipated and significant improvement for the PS5 Pro. The community eagerly awaits its implementation next month.
