The ‘iPhone 17 Air’ Could Be a New Mid-Range Model

Ever since the initial reports surfaced over a year ago suggesting that Apple might introduce an “iPhone Slim” to replace the iPhone Plus, there has been ongoing speculation about where this new model, informally referred to as the “iPhone 17 Air” until an official name is announced by Apple, will fit within the existing lineup.

It was evident from the beginning that Apple was planning to take a different approach, phasing out the larger-screened standard iPhone in favor of something more unique. Initial expectations for the new iPhone included moderate specifications, such as a single camera, with early indications pointing towards a potential emphasis on luxury design over functionality, positioning it at the top end of the lineup, even above the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

While this may seem unconventional, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. When Apple introduced the original MacBook Air 17 years ago, it stood out not only for being the thinnest laptop but also for its premium price tag. Marketed as an ultra-thin “executive laptop,” it was priced higher than the base 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, especially if you opted for the SSD version.

Recent rumors, however, suggest that Apple may not take the luxury pricing route with the “iPhone 17 Air.” Instead, it is anticipated to be priced similarly to the iPhone 16 Plus. Although there could be a price increase across the entire iPhone 17 lineup this year, the sleek new iPhone model is likely to fall between the base iPhone 17 and the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro in terms of pricing.

Distinct from the iPhone 17, the “iPhone 17 Air” is expected to feature several differences besides its ultra-slim design, potentially as thin as 5.5 mm. While a single camera is a given, Apple may compensate for this limitation in other aspects beyond just the design.

One prominent rumor suggests that Apple will opt for an A19 Pro chip in the “iPhone Air,” rather than the A19 expected in the base iPhone 17 (and possibly an iPhone 17e next year). However, there have been conflicting reports regarding which chip Apple will use, with speculations ranging from using the A19 Pro exclusively in Pro models to a combination of different chips across the lineup.

Recent leaks have reiterated the prediction that the “iPhone 17 Air” will feature a scaled-down version of the A19 Pro chip, potentially offering enhanced performance compared to the iPhone 17 despite the single camera and expected shorter battery life.

What’s in a Name?

These speculations all hinge on Apple’s naming convention for the chips this year. While there is speculation that the “iPhone 17 Air” could receive a superior chip compared to the iPhone 17, Apple might reserve the “Pro” designation for chips used in the iPhone 17 Pro models. The final name for this new iPhone model is also uncertain, with “Air” being a popular guess but Apple having the potential to surprise consumers with a different choice.

Regardless of its name, the “iPhone 17 Air” is expected to cater to customers with unique preferences compared to traditional iPhone buyers, offering a different market proposition that will be intriguing to observe.
