Many women in the technology industry are facing challenges in maintaining work-life balance, according to a survey conducted by recruitment firm Lorien. The survey found that 45% of women in the technology sector have experienced difficulties with work-life balance, making it the biggest barrier in their career. Gender bias and discrimination were also cited as significant roadblocks, with almost 30% of respondents highlighting this issue. Darren Topping, director of enterprise solutions, insights, and partnerships for Lorien’s parent company Impellam Group, emphasized the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for women in technology. He stressed the need for greater representation at senior levels and creating a truly inclusive workplace that recognizes work-life balance as a necessity, not a luxury. While the number of women pursuing careers in technology is increasing, the growth is slow. Research from BCS revealed that the percentage of women in the UK tech sector only increased by 4% over four years, from 16% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. The lack of an inclusive culture in the tech workplace is a key factor contributing to this slow growth, discouraging women from joining or causing them to leave the industry. Despite 75% of women in the technology sector feeling that their current work environment is inclusive and supportive, only a quarter believe they have the same career advancement opportunities as their male counterparts. The gender inequality prevalent in society, such as women being more likely to have care responsibilities, further exacerbates the challenges faced by women in the tech workplace. Flexible working policies, equal parental support, and clear career progression pathways are essential in empowering women to advance and succeed in their tech careers. Mentorship programs and professional networks play a crucial role in providing support to women in the industry, with in-house training sponsored by companies also being a valuable resource. Encouraging more women to pursue careers in technology requires addressing systemic barriers and promoting gender diversity. Businesses that prioritize inclusion and equal opportunity stand to benefit from retaining top talent and fostering a diverse workforce.
