Improv has always struggled to find its place on the big screen, often being confined to TV shows like Whose Line is it Anyway?. But Amazon Prime Video’s latest film, Deep Cover, is set to change that narrative. As a former improv troupe leader, I am thrilled to see this new representation of improv on screen. Deep Cover follows three aspiring improv comics - Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed - who are recruited by a renegade detective, played by Sean Bean, to infiltrate a drug gang in London. The film explores how the skills of improv performers translate to real-life situations, as the characters find themselves in increasingly dangerous circumstances. Premiering at SXSW London, Deep Cover is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on June 12, 2025. Having been introduced to improv through Whose Line, I was immediately drawn to the freedom it offers actors to explore scenes without the constraints of a script. Training in various forms of improv at comedy schools like Hoopla and The Free Association, I discovered the importance of teamwork and spontaneity in creating compelling performances. Deep Cover touches on these themes of trust and collaboration, as the characters navigate through unexpected challenges while maintaining their composure. The film highlights the value of being present, listening to others, and embracing the unknown - essential elements of successful improv. As the characters delve deeper into the criminal underworld, their improvisational skills are put to the test, leading to hilarious and unexpected outcomes. Despite the tightly woven script, director Tom Kingsley infuses the film with the spirit of improv, paying homage to the art form in a unique and entertaining way. Deep Cover is a refreshing take on improv in cinema, showcasing the talents of Hollywood A-Listers in a genre that is often overlooked. As an improviser myself, I never thought I would see improv portrayed in such a compelling manner on screen, and I am grateful for its existence. Deep Cover premieres on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow.
