I have always had a distaste for phone cases and, for a long time, I resisted using one, opting instead to appreciate the design and take the risk. Back when I started using phones, cases were either used to replace the default cover or deemed unnecessary, but as handsets became more expensive and increasingly slippery to handle due to polished glass surfaces, the need for a case became more apparent. While it gives a premium feel, if you want to avoid your phone looking like it went through a rough ordeal, then a case is pretty much essential. Although I have had some nice cases from brands like Carved and Pela, it still feels like a shame to hide a beautiful phone behind a cover. Then, something quite unique landed in my inbox from Arc. Chris Martin / Foundry This case was unlike anything I had seen before, and initially, I was skeptical. I wanted to dislike it, but after using it for a few months, I had to admit I was wrong. The anti-case design As shown in the pictures, the Arc Pulse is essentially a bumper that you attach to the top and bottom of your phone. It provides protection in key areas with minimal material. The designs vary, mainly to accommodate different camera modules, with some looking more unique than others. In comparison to the bold Galaxy S25 Ultra case, my Pixel 10 looks sleek in the Arc Pulse, which elegantly encases Google's pill-shaped camera bar. Chris Martin / Foundry Attaching each part of the case is relatively easy, and it stays securely in place due to a grippy rubber layer beneath the metal. Initially, I had to readjust the case a few times after putting it on, but it quickly settled in. The metal itself is made of aerospace-grade aluminum and feels very durable. It wraps around the crucial areas, ensuring all four corners are covered and extending around the front so you can place the phone face down without worrying about scratching the screen. While I enjoyed the ability to feel the glossy glass back of the Pixel 10 and see the design more clearly, I still had concerns about how well protected the phone was. Chris Martin / Foundry After using the Arc Pulse for several months, I was pleasantly surprised. My Pixel 10 had fallen out of my pocket onto laminate floors and been knocked off tables onto both wood and tiled floors. Despite numerous drop tests that had me cringing in anticipation of damage, not a single mark was left on the phone. While the phone is still more exposed compared to traditional cases, it's a risk you might be willing to take. Two problems Like any product we test, the Arc Pulse isn't flawless. Firstly, the Arc cases are only available for specific (sometimes very limited) models of iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Nothing phones, and even AirPods. Chris Martin / Foundry Even if you have a compatible phone, the case falls on the pricier side of the market. For instance, the matte black case for my Pixel 10 that I tested costs £59/$69, while the silver option is £79/$89. The rose bronze case for the Galaxy S25 Ultra is priced at £99/$109. And if you opt for the Titanium Onyx Black for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, be prepared to shell out a steep £299/$299 – more than what most budget phones cost.
