Data protection for pets The PDSA, a charity for pets in need, has found that there are 11.1 million dogs and 10.5 million cats in the UK. A majority of pet owners are concerned about the cost of veterinary care for their pets, according to the PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report. This data highlights a market opportunity in pet care that technology firms are beginning to address. Some of these innovations are inspired by advancements in human healthcare. During the London Vet Show at Excel on November 19-20, startups in the pet care technology sector, such as AI for Pet, Sylvester.ai, and VEA, were showcased by Purina's accelerator initiative. These companies are leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance pet healthcare. AI for Pet, for example, uses advanced vision AI to analyze images taken by pet owners with their smartphones. This technology can provide real-time health insights based on images of eyes, skin, teeth, and gait analysis. Sylvester.ai specializes in an AI model that assesses the facial cues of domestic short-haired cats to determine if they are in pain, anxious, or distressed. The company aims to improve the quality of its dataset to better serve cat owners and sitters. VEA has developed a system that integrates patient data with AI to automate notes, diagnostics, and treatment plans for pets. These companies are at the forefront of incorporating artificial intelligence into pet healthcare, offering innovative solutions to improve the well-being of pets. Kim Bill, the head of Nestlé Purina accelerator lab, emphasized the growing role of AI and GenAI in pet health startups. Startups are navigating data protection laws, such as GDPR, to ensure compliance in handling personally identifiable information related to pet owners. In addition to AI, the use of IoT devices in pet healthcare is gaining traction. Devices like tracking collars and VetChip provide real-time health analytics and alerts for pet owners and vets, enabling proactive pet health management. The integration of AI and IoT in pet healthcare is set to revolutionize how pet owners monitor the health and well-being of their pets, potentially reducing the need for costly veterinary care.
