Following a trademark lawsuit, details have emerged about what the first AI device from OpenAI and Jony Ive will not be. In recent court filings, leaders from io, the consumer hardware team acquired by OpenAI from Jony Ive's design studio for $6.5 billion, revealed that the initial device will not be an "in-ear device" or a "wearable." The anticipated release date for this AI device is set for "at least" 2026.Tang Tan, io's chief hardware officer and former Apple design leader, stated in a declaration on June 16th that the prototype referenced by Sam Altman is still at least a year away from being available for sale. Tan clarified that while the design is not yet finalized, it is confirmed that the device is not an in-ear or wearable product.OpenAI's opposition to Iyo's lawsuit on June 12th revealed that io explored various form factors for their device, including desktop-based, mobile, wireless, wired, wearable, and portable options.
