Imagine growing up with all of the latest modern technology and access to information? Smartphones and tablets like the iPhone and iPad are integral to daily life, even for young kids. They’re tools for communicating, learning, entertainment, and work. Essentially, they are impossible to avoid. We likely all want our kids to be tech-savvy. But how do you strike the right balance while they’re young? Here are a few thoughts on how parents can influence their kids’ attitudes and behaviors toward technology and screen time. Lead by ExampleAs is often the case, actions speak louder than words. Your kids will likely develop the same technology and smartphone habits you consistently demonstrate. So, be present and try to keep your iPhone on Silent or Do Not Disturb during important moments, like meals, conversations, and family activities. Resist the urge to check notifications constantly unless it’s necessary for work. These small actions add up and create lasting impressions. Kids can be taught that relationships come before screens. Everyone needs to respect these boundaries, including adults. These tech-free areas need to fit with your lifestyle. Places like the dinner table, family gathering spaces, and possibly even bedrooms are a few suggestions. Having tech-free areas will reduce screen time and encourage healthier habits, like promoting better sleep or more quality family time. Again, kids are likely to adapt easier if they see their family members following suit. Moving forward, let’s try to show our children how to use technology, like iPhones and iPads, as tools for growth rather than simply a distraction. Let’s remind them that real life happens outside the four corners of a screen.
