YouTube to Update Policies to Crack Down on Inauthentic Content YouTube is set to implement new policies aimed at limiting creators' ability to profit from "inauthentic" content, such as mass-produced and repetitive videos created with the help of AI technology. While the exact policy language has not been disclosed yet, creators have always been required to upload original and authentic content. The upcoming update will help creators better understand what constitutes "inauthentic" content in today's landscape. Despite concerns from some creators that the changes may impact certain video genres like reaction videos, YouTube's Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, Rene Ritchie, clarified that the update is a minor adjustment to existing policies. The focus is on identifying mass-produced or repetitive content that has long been ineligible for monetization due to being perceived as spam by viewers. Ritchie did not address the growing ease of creating such content with AI technology. The proliferation of AI-generated videos, known as AI slop, has flooded YouTube with low-quality content produced using generative AI tools. From AI voiceovers on photos and videos to fake news events and deepfake scams, the platform has seen a rise in questionable content. As YouTube aims to maintain its reputation and value, clear policies are essential to prevent the spread of AI slop and protect its community. The upcoming changes signal a proactive effort to enforce stricter guidelines and potentially bar creators of such content from the YPP.
