The closure of Cybershoes, the company behind the unique VR locomotion device, marks the end of an era for one of VR's most innovative peripherals. News of the shutdown was first reported by Antony 'Skarred Ghost' Vitillo, revealing that production of Cybershoes ceased two years ago. The final chapter came in April 2025 when the Austria-based company officially closed its doors. Cybershoes co-founder Igor Mitric Lavovski confirmed the shutdown in a LinkedIn post, signaling the end of an era for the company. While specific details about the company's financial situation remain unclear, Austrian law mandates that companies file for insolvency within 60 days of becoming insolvent or over-indebted. This may shed more light on the situation in the near future. Unlike traditional VR treadmills, Cybershoes offered a seated VR gameplay experience with shoe-mounted rollers and an IMU for foot orientation tracking. This allowed users to simulate walking or running in VR while seated. Despite never receiving public investment from traditional venture capital, Cybershoes found success through crowdfunding campaigns, attracting over €200,000 in their first Kickstarter campaign in 2018. Subsequent campaigns in 2019 and 2020 also garnered support from backers. As of now, Cybershoes are out of stock on their official store and Amazon, with the latest Quest-compatible version selling out in late 2024.
