Apple is gearing up to launch iOS 17.4 to the public next week, featuring a significant update for EU users that allows third-party app stores and more. In anticipation of the Digital Markets Act taking effect, Apple has released a comprehensive resource detailing all the changes and its commitment to safeguarding user security and privacy in the European Union. Earlier this year, it was announced that Apple would be opening up iOS to third-party app stores in the EU for the first time due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This move, along with a new commission structure and third-party default web browsers, represents a major shift in Apple's approach. Prior to the official launch of iOS 17.4 with these updates in the EU, Apple has published a 60-page whitepaper outlining the upcoming changes. The whitepaper emphasizes Apple's dedication to ensuring security and privacy for users, stating that these safeguards will help maintain a secure and privacy-protecting iPhone experience for EU users. These safeguards will help keep EU users’ iPhone experience as secure, privacy-protecting, and safe as possible—although not to the same degree as in the rest of the world. Apple highlights its commitment to creating products that enrich users' lives globally, with a strong emphasis on security, privacy, and safety features. To comply with the DMA's requirements, Apple has developed over 600 new APIs and developer tools. One of the key concerns raised by Apple is the potential for malicious actors to exploit the new third-party app stores in the EU, as these markets present new opportunities for cyber threats. Malicious actors have long struggled to gain access to iPhone because of its best-in-class security and privacy protections. Apple’s integrated approach to platform security has put the iOS ecosystem out of the reach of commodity malware... Apple also addresses the introduction of alternative app store payment options, cautioning users about the potential loss of safety and security features provided by the App Store's private and secure commerce system. To support the changes we’ve announced to comply with the DMA, we are also introducing the ability for developers in the App Store to use alternative payment options... In addition to these changes, Apple will implement App Store product page labels, in-app disclosure sheets, and expanded data portability for EU users with iOS 17.4. These updates aim to inform and protect users in their app transactions. Apple's efforts to comply with the DMA and enhance user protection are geared towards making the iPhone the most secure and privacy-protecting smartphone in the European Union.
