The usage of subtitles and captions in TV shows and movies is continuously increasing, driven by the popularity of foreign language content and the need for clearer audio tracks. Apple is enhancing the subtitles experience in the native video player on iPhone and iPad with the latest iOS 26.4 update, while a similar update is rolling out to Apple TV with tvOS 26.4. These updates now allow users to change the appearance of subtitles while watching their favorite content. The Subtitles menu in the video player has been redesigned to include new controls for adjusting their style. Previously, users could only toggle subtitles on or off and select the language for captions. Now, there is a dedicated section for Style, offering preset options like 'Classic', 'Large Text', 'Outline Text', and 'Transparent Background'. Users can also create custom styles by choosing font, size, and color options. All these style settings were previously buried in Accessibility Settings, but now they are easily accessible within the video player interface, making it more convenient to change styles on the go. This new feature is available in the system's native video player, meaning it works in apps like Apple TV and Safari. Third-party apps using the native player will also automatically benefit from this enhancement. iOS 26.4 is currently in developer beta and is expected to be released to the public in March or April, although Apple has not confirmed a specific timeline yet.
