Vuzix, a well-established player in the smart glasses industry, has recently announced a significant $5 million investment from Quanta Computer, a prominent Taiwan-based ODM and major Apple assembler. This latest investment marks the second tranche following an initial $10 million investment made by Quanta in September 2024, which included the purchase of Vuzix common stock at $1.30 per share. At the time, Vuzix had anticipated a total investment of $20 million from Quanta. Paul Travers, the President and CEO of Vuzix, highlighted that the funding will be utilized to enhance Vuzix's waveguide manufacturing capabilities. This enhancement is expected to enable Vuzix to deliver "the world's most affordable, lightweight, and performance-driven AI smart glasses for mass-market adoption." Travers also emphasized that this investment signifies an important milestone in strengthening the partnership between Vuzix and Quanta and expanding the capabilities of their cutting-edge waveguide production facility. The company is also known for producing its own waveguides for internal use and licensing purposes. Vuzix has previously collaborated on integrating its waveguide technology with companies like Garmin, Avegant, a major US Fortune 50 tech firm, and a leading US defense supplier. Although Vuzix had released a few consumer devices in the 2010s, including the V920 video eyewear and STAR 1200 AR headset, it wasn't until November 2024 that Vuzix introduced its Z100 smart glasses. Priced at $500, these sleek, AI-assisted smart glasses feature a 640 × 480 monochrome green microLED waveguide and are designed to sync with smartphones to display notifications, fitness metrics, maps, catering to both everyday consumers and enterprise clients. Interestingly, this investment comes at a time when there is a growing market interest in smart glasses. Google recently announced a partnership with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to launch a line of stylish smart glasses running on Android XR. Furthermore, Meta has confirmed an expansion of its collaboration with Ray-Ban Meta-maker EssilorLuxottica to develop Oakley-branded smart glasses, set to be released on June 20th, 2025. Rumors circulating suggest that both Samsung and Apple are gearing up to introduce their own smart glasses soon, with speculations indicating that Samsung could unveil its device this year and Apple potentially following suit next year.
