I have had the opportunity to review a variety of digital photo frames over the years. Initially, I was skeptical about them as the cheaper options often looked like LCD displays and seemed a bit cheap. However, brands like Aura have produced some excellent options with matte displays that do a good job of replicating a photographic look.
Recently, SwitchBot launched its AI Art Frame, which offers a unique take on digital frames. This frame uses an e-ink display that supports 65,000 colors and displays images without the need for backlighting, resulting in a more authentic-looking photo frame.
In addition to its e-ink display, this frame also boasts AI features, allowing users to create their own AI-generated images or edit existing photos based on presets or personal preferences. This integration of AI features is a simple and logical addition to digital photo frames, and it’s likely that other companies producing digital frames will follow suit.
Due to its e-ink technology, the frame requires very little power to maintain the image on the display, enabling it to run off a battery with up to 2 years of battery life. This feature allows users to mount the frame on the wall without the need for unsightly cables typically associated with traditional frames.
While the SwitchBot AI Art Frame sounds like the perfect digital photo frame, there are some caveats that I will address in my review.

The 13.3″ model is expected to be more visually impressive, while the 31.5″ model will offer a striking appearance at a higher cost. The aluminum alloy frame feels premium and sturdy, a significant upgrade from the plastic frames found in budget digital photo frames. The compatibility with IKEA RODALM frames allows for customization without being limited to SwitchBot’s design choices. Wall mounting is easy with standard picture hooks, and the absence of cables provides a clean installation. The frame includes a kickstand for table placement, although it may feel somewhat flimsy and lacks adjustability in angle.
Set Up:
Setting up the SwitchBot AI Art Frame is straightforward. After unboxing, download the SwitchBot app, create an account if needed, and connect the frame via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. The pairing process involves pressing the pairing button on the frame and following in-app instructions. While the connection process is relatively smooth, Wi-Fi credential acceptance may require multiple attempts. Once connected, the frame appears in the device list within the SwitchBot app.
AI Studio Image Generation Subscription:
The main drawback of this AI frame is the subscription required to utilize AI generative features, costing $3.99 (about £3.15) per month for up to 400 images generated monthly. While the fee is understandable, SwitchBot likely outsources image generation to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, incurring ongoing fees. However, the monthly cost may deter some users from continuous subscription. Most users may opt to subscribe on an as-needed basis to update the frame. A block image purchase option would be preferable, offering flexibility in payment methods and usage.
In Use:
The AI features, while unlikely to be continuously subscribed to, offer fun and impressive results. Text-to-image and image-to-image options function as expected, generating lifelike images based on user prompts or presets. Despite being AI-generated, images display realism and quality. The image-to-image function is particularly enjoyable, offering preset styles like oil painting, watercolor, or cartoon/anime-inspired filters. Personal photos transformed into oil paintings look striking on the e-ink display, complementing the artistic style. The 11 pre-set styles may be limited, but combining photos with text-to-image generation adds endless possibilities. Processing times vary but typically complete within 30-60 seconds, with notifications sent when images are ready.
Frame Image Quality:
The e-ink display of the SwitchBot AI Art Frame provides a natural, glare-free appearance. While colors may be muted compared to LCD displays, the display supports 65,000 colors, optimized for smooth gradients and natural images. The lower resolution may be noticeable in non-AI processed photos, with pixels visible up close. The refresh time is characteristic of e-ink displays, taking approximately 19-33 seconds to change images. The limited storage capacity of 10 images may require users to rotate content frequently for variety.
Daily Use Experience:
The SwitchBot app allows scheduling image changes, ideal for displaying different artwork throughout the day. Gallery and slideshow modes offer display options, though the limited storage capacity of 10 images may restrict variety in slideshows. The frame maintains consistent visibility in various lighting conditions, resembling a printed photograph in daylight and eliminating blue light emission in low light. The absence of blue light makes it suitable for bedrooms or spaces requiring minimal screen time effects.
Battery:
While the battery life of the SwitchBot AI Art Frame has not been fully tested, initial usage suggests around 3 months of battery life with regular image changes. The claimed 2-year battery life may only be achieved with minimal image rotation and tasks, such as transferring photos, that drain the battery. Adjusting image rotation intervals may extend battery life to 6-12 months.
