Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Won’t Have Achievements System

Nintendo has officially announced that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will not feature an achievements system, a departure from its competitors’ hardware and platforms.

While other gaming giants such as Microsoft, Sony, and Steam have long implemented Achievements and Trophies systems across all games, Nintendo has chosen not to incorporate such a system into the highly-anticipated Switch 2.

In an interview, Nintendo’s vice president of player and product experience, Bill Trinen, bluntly stated, “Nope,” in response to queries about an achievements system for the Switch 2.

Despite the absence of a traditional achievements system, Nintendo is introducing a modern gaming feature with the GameChat function on the Switch 2, allowing for in-game voice and video chat directly from the console. This marks a departure from the previous reliance on a smartphone app for voice chat on the original Switch.

Interestingly, Nintendo is experimenting with a form of achievements system through the upcoming Switch 2 Edition re-releases of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will include their own achievement lists within the new Zelda Notes App.

The Zelda Notes App will be integrated into Nintendo’s existing Nintendo App, enabling players to track their progress, such as the number of shrines completed, among other metrics. This move hints that Nintendo may be inching closer to incorporating achievements directly into their console’s user interface.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5th, with a retail price of $449.99 in the USA, 49,980 yen in Japan (region-locked), or 69,980 yen in Japan (region-free), and €469.99 in Europe.
