SpaceX will attempt the first commercial spacewalk

This month marks a significant milestone in the era of private spaceflight as SpaceX prepares to launch Polaris Dawn, the first mission in their Polaris program and the second all-civilian mission after Inspiration4 in 2021.

Polaris Dawn, funded by billionaire Jared Isaacman, aims to push the boundaries of SpaceX’s technology and contribute to establishing a long-term human presence in space. The mission is set to launch on July 12, 2024, and will involve groundbreaking experiments and research in space.

One of the key objectives of Polaris Dawn is to conduct the first commercial spacewalk, study the effects of the space environment on human health, test Starlink WiFi connectivity in space, and achieve a high orbit over 800 miles above Earth. This mission is seen as a precursor to SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft, which has ambitious goals of carrying humans to orbit, the Moon, and potentially Mars.

The crew of Polaris Dawn, consisting of Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, and Anna Menon, will spend approximately five days in orbit conducting various experiments. These experiments include studying the impact of radiation on astronauts, researching spaceflight associated neuro ocular syndrome, and performing the first spacewalk on a private mission.

Additionally, the crew will test SpaceX’s newly designed EVA suits for the spacewalk and aim to establish internet connectivity through Starlink from the spacecraft. The mission also aims to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and inspire children’s interest in science through educational initiatives.

Despite the rigorous training and preparation undergone by the crew, the launch date of Polaris Dawn is dependent on technological readiness and may be subject to delays. However, once launched, this mission is expected to provide valuable insights for future space exploration endeavors and advance humanity’s journey into space.
