As the day comes to a close in the UK, and the final moments slip away like sand through a giant hourglass on Graham’s desk, I bid you farewell with a review of Some Goodbyes We Made.
Developed by Safe Flight Games, this hour-long collection features 11 mini-games including visual novels, platformers, and character creators, all presented in a charming desktop interface. Each game explores the theme of bidding goodbye to something or someone – be it an old home, university life, or a lost friend. The Steam page describes how the protagonist captures the emotions of these farewells, offering players a glimpse into the complexity and beauty of each goodbye.
Despite the heavy emotional themes, the games maintain a playful style. From waving goodbye to a departing train to causing mischief during a house move, the mini-games offer a variety of experiences. Safe Flight’s developers, both NYU Game Center alumni, bring their unique perspective to this collection of endings, reminiscent of John Thyer’s micro-RPG Facets.
While the concept intrigues me, I approach Some Goodbyes We Made with caution. The idea of revisiting personal goodbyes may not be appealing to everyone. However, I appreciate the creativity behind this game and look forward to exploring how different genres interpret the concept of farewells.
Some Goodbyes We Made is set to launch on 25th October. Until then, I bid you not farewell, but see you tomorrow!
