Slate wants to build more than just a cheap truck

After making waves with its affordable electric pickup truck, Slate Auto has big plans for the future. In a recent interview with InsideEVs, CEO Chris Barman revealed that the company is not stopping at just one model. While the first Slate vehicle, a no-frills electric truck priced around the mid-$20,000 range, is still in the final stages of pricing and production preparation, Slate is already looking ahead to expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

The initial Slate truck, a compact rear-motor electric pickup with an optional extended range battery, has garnered significant interest and is set to begin production by the end of 2026 at a plant in the Midwest. With over 150,000 refundable reservations already secured, Slate is on track to reach its targeted annual output in 2027.

Looking Beyond the Pickup Truck

While the exact pricing is still being determined, Barman emphasized the company’s commitment to offering the most affordable options possible. The Slate truck follows a design philosophy of simplicity and customer-driven customization. Buyers can choose a basic \”Blank Slate\” model and add accessories like wraps, wheels, or even a kit to convert the truck into a five-seat SUV for an additional cost.

This customer-centric approach will also guide Slate’s future models. Barman confirmed that the company is not limiting itself to just one electric vehicle. As Slate gains insights from production, sales, and customer input, it aims to expand its range of vehicles. This could include different body styles or vehicle categories that uphold Slate’s commitment to affordability and simplicity, although specific details and timelines are still in development.

Slate’s strategy sets it apart from traditional EV manufacturers, who typically introduce high-end models before offering more affordable versions. By launching a basic, feature-light truck first, Slate has generated both interest and skepticism. If successful, the company could attract buyers seeking practicality and affordability over luxury. The expansion of Slate’s vehicle lineup will depend on production capabilities, supplier relationships, and sustained demand in the coming years. However, Barman’s statements indicate a clear vision for Slate as a provider of accessible electric vehicles across various categories.
