Regarded as one of the top TV shows of 2024, the renewal of Shōgun for a second season took many by surprise. Adapted from a novel of the same name, the first season of the series covered the entire storyline. During the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada and show creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks sat down with Deadline to discuss the upcoming season, hinting at unexpected twists in the plot.
“We’ve just wrapped up our time in the writers’ room and finalized the 10 episodes, including the finale. This allows us to move forward with our shooting plans. We are thrilled about the direction we are taking,” Marks revealed. “I believe audiences will be in for a surprise right from the first episode of the second part. We are excited to see where this journey leads us in future stories, especially for [Hiroyuki Sanada].”
While the show has been greenlit for a second and third season, no official release dates have been announced. It appears that filming for the second season is yet to commence, making a 2025 debut unlikely.
Sanada’s portrayal earned him the Best Actor in a Drama Series award at the Critics’ Choice Awards. He expressed his eagerness to see his character Toranaga rise to power in the upcoming season.
“In Season 1, [Toranaga] had not yet assumed the role of Shōgun. I am hopeful to witness his ascent to becoming the leader of Japan,” he shared.
