Shazam Now Shows the Moments Where Songs Go Viral

Apple has introduced a new feature on Shazam called Popular Segments, providing insight into how people discover music.

This feature showcases not only the top charting songs but also the specific moments within those songs that attract the most attention—particularly the segments where users frequently use Shazam to identify the music playing.

Popular Segments highlights the key moments in a track that generated the most Shazam activity in the past week. This interactive feature, available for top tracks on Shazam’s charts, displays the relative popularity of segments throughout a song. Users can hover over the graph to reveal precise time markers and corresponding segments.

This distinction is crucial, as it signifies the points in a song where many listeners find it intriguing or catchy enough to want to identify and potentially save for future listening.

“Shazam has always been about connecting fans to music that moves them,” stated Apple Music co-head Ole Obermann. “With Popular Segments, we’re providing unprecedented insight by revealing the exact moment in a song that captured the listener’s attention.”

The Evolution of Shazam

Despite Apple’s acquisition of Shazam in 2018, the company has maintained its independence. The app continues to operate as a standalone platform on both iOS and Android devices, with subtle enhancements over the years.

Apple has gradually improved the app, introducing features like text-based search, Music Recognition button on iPhone Control Center, and web app integration. Popular Segments is the latest addition that caters to users on all platforms.

Currently, the feature is exclusively available on the web app, accessible on desktop and mobile devices by selecting “Charts” and choosing a track. There is no confirmation yet on its availability on the official mobile apps.
