Samsung Unpacked is anticipated to begin next month with the usual array of hardware announcements, including the potential unveiling of the company’s latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7, as well as the newest Galaxy Watch 8. However, rumors suggest that Samsung is also planning to showcase its upcoming XR headset, Project Moohan, at the event.
Project Moohan was introduced alongside Android XR in December 2024, marking it as the first device to run Google’s upcoming XR operating system. Although Samsung has hinted at a launch sometime this year, no specific date or official name has been confirmed.
Now, a well-known Samsung leaker known as ‘Panda Flash’ has hinted that the release date for the company’s upcoming mixed reality headset may be revealed at the event.
While there were expectations to hear about Project Moohan at Google I/O last month, it seems that Samsung may be holding off on the announcement until their own event.
‘Panda Flash’ also suggests that the headset will initially launch in South Korea before being rolled out globally, following a similar strategy to Apple’s launch of Vision Pro.
While Samsung has showcased its Vision Pro competitor at various events over the past year, details about the XR headset’s specifications have been scarce.
So far, we know that the Android XR headset will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 + Gen 2 processor, Sony-sourced micro-OLED panels, pancake lenses, automatic interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, eye and hand-tracking support, an optional magnetically-attached light shield, and a removable external battery pack. It is also expected to support VR motion controllers, although specifics about these controllers have not been revealed.
Additionally, Samsung is rumored to be working on smart glasses that could potentially launch this year, aiming to compete with Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.
Stay tuned for official dates for Samsung Unpacked, scheduled to take place early next month in New York City.
